The delegations of the Republic of Korea and the State of Israel met in Jerusalem on May 18, 2009 at the Fourth Joint Committee as mandated by the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Government of the State of Israel on Economic Cooperation, signed on August 28, 2000. The Korean delegation was headed by Ho-Young Ahn; Deputy Minister for Trade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Israeli delegation was headed by Boaz Hirsh, Senior Deputy Director General and Head of the Foreign Trade Administration of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor.

The two sides reviewed the overall economic relations between Korea and Israel and expressed their satisfaction over the growth-path taken by the bilateral trade volume, which reached 1.9 billion U.S dollars in 2008. The two sides shared the view that the trend of growth should be continued. They agreed on the importance of economic cooperation given the current financial crisis which continues to affect the international market, and exchanged views on governmental policy to overcome the challenges. Two sides agreed to launch a joint study on a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Israel and Korea.

The two sides also agreed to strengthen the cooperation in the sectors of renewable energy, water, industrial technology and industrial research and development.

The push for increased cooperation comes after direct passenger flights between Seoul and Tel Aviv resumed in September 2008 by “Korean Air”, leading to greater economic, cultural and personal exchanges.
